Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) on Tuesday endorsed Graham Platner in the Democratic primary for Senate in Maine.
Heinrich told Politico that Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and oyster farmer running a populist campaign, is “exactly the person the Democratic Party needs to win back working people.”
Platner is part of a crowded primary field in the race to take on five-term incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). His top competition is Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D), whom Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) is backing.
“Honored to receive another endorsement from a future colleague,” Platner wrote Tuesday on the social platform X. “I look forward to working with @MartinHeinrich to end forever wars and pass Medicare for All.”
In addition to Heinrich, Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego (Ariz.), also a Marine Corps veteran, and progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) are backing Platner.
