Steven Gerrard on how Florian Wirtz could respond if Liverpool click without him:

“That might be the situation where he goes, ‘Shit, I’ve lost my place here.’ That little bit of fear, it’s happened to me.

“I’ve come out of the team and Didi Hamann comes in, or early doors Gary McAllister whips a free-kick in. ‘I’m not getting my place back here.’ What do I do in the next training session? The real me comes back in training.

“The key is whether he can turn this around between now and the end of the season. It needs to come from within him, but he needs support from his manager, coaches and senior players to protect him a bit.”

Steven Gerrard on Florian Wirtz’s form:

“I’m not denying that he’s underperformed and that we should have seen a lot more in terms of the price tag, but I think he’s got the talent to turn it around.

“His confidence is shot at Liverpool at the moment. You can see it when you’re watching him live. He’s giving the ball away, simple balls he wouldn’t give away.

“I watch him for Germany, different player. Maybe that team is more settled. He seemed to be playing with his shoulders back, different energy, turning in pockets of space and executing in the final third with his passing, getting assists and goals.”

Steven Gerrard on whether a spell out of the team could help Florian Wirtz:

“Sometimes I’ve had dips in form or lacked confidence, and the best thing for me was to come out of the team for a period. Someone plays in your position and you get that fear or mojo back.

“The problem with Liverpool is Ekitike is missing, Isak has been a bit flaky, Gakpo has been injured, so at the moment you can’t do that. But once you have bodies back, I don’t think it would do him any harm to come out and look in.”

Steven Gerrard on giving Florian Wirtz time:

“I think you need to find a solution for Wirtz. He needs to be looking at his clips in games and in training. He needs help. He needs support.

“At the end of the season, if the form is still the same and he’s underperforming, he’s had two seasons then. That’s a little different, but right now, give him a chance.

“I’m not defending him because I’m a Liverpool fan. He’s not been good enough and we need to see more, but you can’t write these people off.”
